Sector context
An SMB finance lead juggles three clocks that rarely align: collections that arrive late, fixed expenses that don't wait, and taxes that show up at month-end. A cash position that looks positive can dry up in weeks if accounts-receivable aging slips or if a major client renegotiates terms. Apparently trivial decisions — paying suppliers at 30 or 60 days, charging VAT split or at the end, holding cash or investing in a fixed-term deposit — end up defining whether the business grows or consumes working capital every quarter. The finance simulators and calculators model that cycle: projected cash flow, portfolio credit risk, operating budget, net salary, and the real cost of late collections.
Key metrics
Indicators an SMB operator in the sector should know before modeling decisions.
Days sales outstanding (DSO)
Accounts receivable / average daily sales. Healthy at 30–45 days in B2B; above 60 signals a collection problem or client concentration that dictates terms.
Net working capital
Current assets − current liabilities. Measures how much cash + receivables you have to sustain operations. Negative for several months suggests technical insolvency before accounting losses appear.
Operating break-even
Sales required to cover fixed + variable costs. Knowing it identifies the floor below which the business destroys value with each additional operation.
Net margin
Net income / sales. SMBs range 3–15% by sector. Comparing against the sectoral benchmark reveals whether cost of service or pricing is misaligned.
Debt service coverage ratio (DSCR)
EBITDA / annual debt service. Banks demand 1.25× or more to refinance. Below 1× the business doesn't generate enough cash to amortize.
How to pick the right simulator
If you need to anticipate whether cash holds this month and the next, the cash-flow simulator projects inflows and outflows on real timing. If late collections are bleeding you, the collections-and-aging simulator quantifies the real cost of aging and models recovery scenarios. To evaluate loans, mortgages, or financing a project, the personal-loan and mortgage calculators break down installment, total interest, and amortization. If you're setting an annual budget, the operating budget simulator lets you play with optimistic/base/pessimistic scenarios. For investment decisions, the investment-portfolio and credit-risk simulators model risk-adjusted return and expected loss for the book.
Practical example
Hypothetical case in US dollars. Plug your real numbers into the simulator to validate your own scenario.
An SMB bills $80,000 USD per month with a DSO of 52 days, meaning $138,667 USD is permanently stuck in accounts receivable. The collections-and-aging simulator calculates that reducing DSO to 38 days frees $37,333 USD of working capital — cash the business can use to anticipate purchases at a discount (typically 2–3% for prompt payment) or to skip a working-capital loan at 18% annual. Indirect annual saving: $6,720 USD by avoiding loan interest + $9,600 USD via early-payment discounts = $16,320 USD of margin impact without selling a single extra dollar.
Common modeling mistakes
Traps we see when reviewing sector planning. Avoid them before closing your own model.
Confusing profit with cash
An invoiced sale you haven't collected is accounting profit but not cash. Businesses with positive margin can fail through illiquidity if the collect-and-pay cycle doesn't match.
Omitting VAT in cash flow
The VAT you collect isn't yours; you owe it to the tax authority next month. Spending it as operating income leaves you short when the first VAT payment hits.
Assuming growth without proportional working capital
Every $100k of new B2B sales at 45-day collections consumes roughly $12k of permanent working capital. Growing without matched financing turns success into cash strangulation.
Paying taxes only at year-end
Income tax, VAT, and payroll accumulate continuously. Reserving the right percentage monthly avoids the year-end shock and surcharges. The VAT or net-salary calculator tells you exactly how much to set aside.
Scope and limitations
Finance simulators are not certified financial or tax advice. Rates, taxes, and regulatory brackets change by country and fiscal year — verify with your accountant before material decisions (loans, restructures, large investments, tax planning). The models project under stable conditions and don't anticipate macro shocks (sharp devaluation, reference-rate hikes, sector-specific regulatory shifts). For decisions that commit more than 5% of business equity, pair the simulator with professional advice in your jurisdiction.
